Cardinals Survive Pitchers Duel With 2-1 Win Over Reds
Cardinals Score Two Runs in the 7th Inning to Break the 0-0 Tie
The Cardinals and Reds played a thrilling pitchers' duel on Wednesday night, with the Cardinals ultimately coming out on top with a 2-1 victory. Both starting pitchers, Jack Flaherty for the Cardinals and Luis Castillo for the Reds, were outstanding, each allowing just three hits through the first six innings.
The Cardinals finally broke the scoreless tie in the top of the seventh inning. Paul Goldschmidt led off with a single, and Nolan Arenado followed with a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. Albert Pujols then grounded out to second, scoring Goldschmidt to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Reds Tie the Game in the Bottom of the 7th
The Reds answered back in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kyle Farmer led off with a single, and Aristides Aquino followed with a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. Jonathan India then grounded out to second, scoring Farmer to tie the game at 1-1.
Cardinals Win it in the 9th
The Cardinals wasted no time in retaking the lead in the top of the ninth inning. Harrison Bader led off with a single, and Edmundo Sosa followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Bader to second. Dylan Carlson then singled to right field, scoring Bader to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.
Giovanny Gallegos pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his 12th save of the season, and the Cardinals held on for the 2-1 victory.
Flaherty and Castillo Both Impress
Both Flaherty and Castillo were outstanding in their starts. Flaherty allowed just three hits and one walk over seven innings, striking out 10 batters. Castillo allowed just four hits and two walks over seven innings, striking out eight batters.
The Cardinals and Reds will face off again on Thursday night in the second game of their three-game series.
